Incorporated on 23rd August 1985, Biomira is an international biotechnology company which is engaged primarily in the research and development of products to treat cancer. The company's R&D efforts are currently focused on its core competency in immunotherapeutics, designed to stimulate an individual’s immune system to recognise cancer cells and control the growth and spreading of cancers.

Biomira's immunotherapeutics programme currently focuses on the development of synthetic vaccines for active specific immunotherapy (ASI), utilising synthetic carbohydrate or synthetic peptide mimics of natural cancer associated antigens (Ags) to induce anticancer immune responses. The aim is to induce appropriate immune responses which will control the growth of cancers, prevent or delay metastasis and increase the survival of cancer patients. Also, novel liposome-based strategies are being developed to look at the potential for liposomal encapsulation of vaccines.

Biomira is developing several therapeutic vaccines, which are designed to stimulate the patient's immune system to fight cancer. The company believes that its efforts may lead to a new generation of effective, non-toxic, anticancer therapeutics.
