Founded on 6th April 1999, via the merger of Astra and Zeneca, AstraZeneca is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, with principal operations comprising Healthcare, incorporating Pharmaceuticals, Salick Health Care, medical devices and implants, plus diagnostic products. Other businesses include Marlow Foods and miscellaneous operations. In addition to oncology, the company's other major therapeutic areas include: gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular, pain control/anaesthesia, central nervous system and infection.

The company has worldwide operations with corporate headquarters in London, UK, research and development HQ in Södertälje, Sweden and a strong presence in the US market. AstraZeneca has sales in over 100 countries, manufacturing in 20 and major research centres in five.

On 23rd December 2005, AstraZeneca announced an agreement to acquire KuDOS Pharmaceuticals, a privately-owned UK biotechnology company, focused on the discovery and development of oncology therapies based on the inhibition of DNA repair. The total share capital of the company was purchased for approximately US$210 million in cash. The transaction closed on 31st January 2006, with KuDOS keeping its name. This transaction provides AstraZeneca with a widely-recognised expert group and technology platform in an area of research that complements internal capabilities in oncology. The DNA repair platform developed by KuDOS, in association with its founder Professor Stephen Jackson of Cambridge University, includes several different approaches towards inhibition of enzymes involved in the responses to various types of DNA damage. DNA repair inhibitors have the potential to kill cancer cells either as stand-alone therapy or by enhancing the efficacy of chemo- and radiotherapies. KuDOS has two UK sites, in Cambridge and Horsham.
